Job Title: Senior Health and Safety Consultant - Construction

Salary: £60k - £65k

Location: Remote

Duration: Permanent


Job Summary

The Health & Safety Consultant provides high-level consultancy support and expert advice to clients across a broad range of sectors. This includes clients with retained health and safety support contracts, as well as organisations requiring project-based consultancy, construction-related support, incident investigations, audits, or training delivery. The role ensures clients meet their legal duties, maintain robust health and safety management systems, and receive tailored, professional guidance aligned with best practice and legislation.


Academic / Technical Qualifications & Skills

  • Preferably degree-qualified in a relevant discipline.
  • CMIOSH or ex-HSE Inspector (or working toward CMIOSH within contractual timeframe).
  • NEBOSH Fire Management and Fire Risk Assessment or equivalent knowledge/experience.
  • City & Guilds Water Responsible Person qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of HTMs.
  • Lead Auditor qualification or demonstrable auditing experience.
  • NEBOSH Construction or equivalent construction safety knowledge.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office, ideally Office 365.
  • Strong Business English skills (grammar, vocabulary, written communication).
  • Strong logical, verbal, and numerical reasoning skills.
  • Personal attributes that align with company values (as evidenced through assessment centre).
  • Solid technical knowledge of key health and safety legislation.


Technical Competence / Experience

  • Broad experience as a health and safety practitioner with knowledge of UK legislation across commerce and industry (excluding highly specialised sectors such as offshore, nuclear, or rail).
  • Experience in a practitioner or enforcement role.
  • Demonstrable experience engaging with enforcement authorities.
  • Approved trainer for all Quadriga courses, including IOSH Managing Safely (excluding IOSH SED).
  • Ability to complete audits, reviews, and implement safety management systems across the company’s full portfolio, including SPV clients.
  • Experience acting as client manager for small to medium retained clients.
  • Strong understanding of commercial agreements, time recording, and workload planning.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of CDM 2015 and general construction legislation—able to advise on pre-construction, construction phase, and handover requirements.
  • Experience supporting bespoke and prestigious construction projects, building trusting relationships, understanding client needs, and identifying future commercial opportunities.
  • Skilled in reviewing and producing high-quality deliverables such as PQQs, tender reviews, site visit reports, metrics dashboards, monthly updates, board reports, and health & safety file reviews.
  • Ability to conduct regular site visits, monitor compliance, identify issues, and provide actionable, innovative recommendations through reports, feedback sessions, and presentations.


If any required competencies are not demonstrated, these will form part of a structured development plan with appropriate coaching and training.


Duties and Responsibilities

1. Advice & Support to Clients

  • Provide professional consultancy services across all areas of health and safety, including fire safety advice relating to life safety and means of escape.
  • Produce written guidance, statutory risk assessments, policies, and other documentation.
  • Conduct audits of client premises and activities, producing practical, solution-focused reports.

2. Communication & Training

  • Identify health and safety training needs within client organisations.
  • Prepare and deliver bespoke training to managers, employees, and client groups.
  • Contribute to internal training for consultants and staff, supporting continuous professional development.

3. Incident Management

  • Investigate accidents, near misses, dangerous occurrences, and other incidents as requested.
  • Advise clients on RIDDOR reporting duties and ensure correct follow-up procedures.

4. Client Management & Commercial Agreements

  • Agree commercial arrangements with new or existing clients and scope required time commitments.
  • Produce proposals for new or additional services where required.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships as the client’s competent person, including managing medium-sized retained clients.
  • Support management of larger client accounts as required.

5. Professional Development

  • Maintain an up-to-date CPD record in line with IOSH requirements.
  • Contribute to the collective technical knowledge of colleagues through internal CPD days.
